History
“Corinthians” Football Club was started way back in 1988, by a group of friends who mainly worked together, or were students together, who played 5 a-side football once a week at Focus Youth Centre. When the club was formed the original name was going to be Westcliff Rangers? At the meeting with the Borough Com to register they said we cannot use that name (already a Westcliff Rovers or some such waffle) anyway we had to think up a new name on the spot. Someone blurted out 'Corinthians', everyone laughed and a legend was born. That Legend is our club which we should all be proud of.
The team was formed by an eclectic mix of heavy metal fans, skinheads, drop out hippies and freaks of nature as well as the odd pizza chef and local greengrocer, all of which made for interesting dialogue on many a cold Sunday morning.
The club also boasted the first Asian player to grace the local pitches, known locally as Abdul Aziz, but known internationally as “Azfarazican beforeipassez.” Abdul was a long standing servant of the team (spending hours as a Sub waiting to get on). Nowadays, he must be as old as my Naan.
Rumour has it that many of the original founders can sometimes be seen wandering across long abandoned pitches, when the sun is high in the sky. However as “reunions” have come and gone, search parties have been called off in the hunt for Shepsy, Mouse Morris, and Martin the Veg Man. As part of “Adopt a Donkey” week, the club finally formed a “2nd team” in 2007. Many a pre-season “interclub friendly” followed, whereby huge chucks of flesh as well as turf were taken.
In 2005 the club also formed a Vets team, introducing a weight for age restriction. However, due to technical difficulties, as well as manslaughter with diminished responsibilities, the vet’s team folded quicker than Darren Summerhayes’ wallet. The Vet’s team was then reformed after much request in 2014.
A junior’s was always the next plan for Corinthians and we managed to make this a reality in 2015.
With now over 110 Squad members signed on Corinthians the future is looking , Currently the list of teams for the upcoming 2017-18 season will be Firsts , Reserves , Vets , U21 Men ,Sunday Men , Junior U15 and Junior U13.
I would like to wish the New Sunday team my best wishes on their journey with Corinthians, let’s hope we see some of you pulling the Vets shirts on in years to come.
Today, the club boasts 7 charter standard teams, and the founding fathers would be delighted that many of the charitable aspects of the club still remain. We are all proud of our club.
